The INFLATED chest of drawers grew out of a shared curiosity between designer and master cabinetmaker: what can a modern chest of drawers look like? The result is a striking design object that demonstrates the aesthetic potential of wood and the exceptional level of craftsmanship behind it.

What happens when you take one of the home’s most classic storage pieces and free it from the form we normally expect of a chest of drawers? That is the starting point for INFLATED.

A chest of drawers does not have to be square. It does not have to be neutral. And it does not have to quietly fade into the background.

“INFLATED is not designed to fill a room. It is designed to transform it,” says the designer of the piece, Hans Sandgren Jakobsen.

INFLATED explores what happens when function and form are allowed to challenge one another.

INFLATED turns everything upside down

The chest of drawers is one of the most functional pieces of furniture in design history. A simple construction, drawers, and a fixed place in the room. INFLATED takes its starting point in this familiar typology – but turns it upside down. The traditional straight lines are replaced by an organic language of form, where the front moves in soft waves. The shape is therefore not merely a frame around the function. It becomes an active part of the experience.

From Storage to Object

INFLATED is designed for storage. But that is not necessarily the first thing you notice. Perhaps this is precisely where the piece moves from being a traditional storage unit to becoming a design object. It can stand alone. It can become the visual focal point of a room. And it can be experienced as a sculpture, even when the drawers are closed. Function remains the foundation. But form has been given the freedom to tell its own story.

Hans Sandgren Jakobsen trained as a cabinetmaker and graduated as a designer from the Danish Design School in Copenhagen.
